The first twelve

Air Chief Marshal NC Suri

Air Chief Marshal Suri was the first Air Chief to induct women in the IAF. He commenced the process in 1991, immediately after taking charge as CAS. the process of the induction of women was fast tracked and it had Active support from the Defence Secretary N.N. Vohra, the raksha mantri S. Pawar and the prime minister Narasimha Rao.

In January 1992, the training commenced at the air force academy, Dundigal. Women Flight cadets joined the AFA for the first SSC ground duty officers course on 6th july 1992.

In 1993, twelve women cadets were commissioned as pilot officers (in the iAF Administrative branch), at the Air Force Academy (Dundigal) graduation ceremony on 21st june 1993, presided over by air chief marshal suri.

They were followed by the second batch of 18 women cadets, to be inducted in the flying (transport & helicopter), maintenance and administration branches. For the flying branch the cadets joined in july 1993 and were commissioned in december 1994.

The induction of women was followed by the Indian Navy and the Indian Army.
